The competition has the following entry categories: Class 1 (up to 250 hectares), Class 2 (251-500 hectares) and Class 3 farms (over 501 hectares). It is open to farm contractors so an owner can enter his farm which is run by a contractor for day to day operations. Contractors can enter their total business, comprising owned or hired land and any subsequent contract farming operations. Plus Class 4 - Specialist Agricultural Contractor (open to an individual or a company delivering a service to a farm business based in Suffolk (not Stubble to Stubble Contract Farming Agreement). e.g. niche services, bailing, grazing, shearing, drainage, beet groups or similar).
Farms are judged from first to third place in each category and winners receive a trophy. Special awards are given for Best Crop, Livestock Enterprise, Conservation and Farm Diversification.
Judges assess the whole business and management of the farms, including enterprise management, marketing, employment and investment strategy.
