Victory 80
Welcome to our Victory 80 display!
This display is to commemorate Victory in Europe and Victory in Japan days 80 years ago.
Our Display this year has been inspired by the forthcoming 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The Show takes place just after the anniversary of Victory in Europe on May 8, 1945, and before the Victory over Japan on August 15, 1945. We believe it is essential to commemorate such important days in history and to recognise those who gave so much for so many 80 years ago.
The area will be represented by volunteers from the Military Trust and the Suffolk Women’s Land Army Memorial Trust. They will wear period costumes and bring period vehicles, which have been carefully restored to demonstrate the equipment and clothing worn at the end of the war. The SWLAMT will show how important the home effort was to the war's success, and the MVT will represent the end of the fighting.
As a centrepiece, we have an original Sherman tank used by the Allies that went ashore in France on D-Day! It is an iconic symbol of how brutal the war had become.
Picture boards and accompanying facts will also be on display to tell the story of the surrender, the joyous return of many soldiers and the terrible losses of personnel that the war took from so many local communities.
Victory in Japan Day is important to this region because many servicemen from Suffolk were posted to the Far East, and many were captured, becoming prisoners of war.
At the end of the Show, the vehicles and volunteers will join in to take the Royal Salute in our Parade at the end of day 2 in the Grand Ring.
Above all, the area should inform, celebrate, and commemorate these truly historic moments in our history.
